Shri Shantadurga Temple is one of the most important and largest temples in Goa, dedicated to Goddess Shantadurga - the goddess who mediated between Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu. Located in the serene village of Kavlem, this magnificent temple features a unique blend of Goan and Portuguese architectural styles. The temple is renowned for its spiritual atmosphere and architectural beauty.

History & Significance

The original Shantadurga Temple was located in Keloshi (modern-day Quelossim) but was relocated to Kavlem during the Portuguese religious persecution in the 16th century. The current temple structure was built in the 18th century and has undergone several renovations. The temple is managed by the Shree Shantadurga Sansthan and maintains ancient traditions while serving modern devotees.

Architecture

The temple showcases a unique architectural style with a large central dome that shows Portuguese influence, combined with traditional Hindu temple elements. The main sanctum features a beautiful idol of Goddess Shantadurga standing between Shiva and Vishnu. The temple complex includes a large water tank, dining hall, and accommodation facilities. The dome is supported by octagonal pillars and features intricate artwork.
