The Basilica of Bom Jesus was constructed in 1605 and consecrated in 1605. The church is dedicated to Infant Jesus (Bom Jesus). It gained prominence as the final resting place of St. Francis Xavier, the "Apostle of the Indies," whose body was brought to Goa in 1554. The church's construction was funded by the Portuguese colonial government and it served as the main Jesuit church in Goa.
The Basilica showcases Portuguese Baroque architecture with a facade combining Doric, Ionic, and Corinthian elements. The church is built of laterite stone and has a simple yet majestic appearance. The interior features magnificent gilded altars, marble flooring, and intricate wood carvings. The main altar is dedicated to Infant Jesus and features a statue of St. Ignatius of Loyola.
