Se Cathedral, dedicated to St. Catherine of Alexandria, is one of the largest and most magnificent churches in Asia and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This stunning Portuguese-Gothic architecture masterpiece took nearly 80 years to complete (1562-1631) and stands as a symbol of Portuguese colonial power and religious devotion in Goa.
The Se Cathedral was built to commemorate the victory of the Portuguese over a Muslim army, leading to the capture of Goa in 1510. The construction began in 1562 during the reign of King Dom Sebastiao and was completed in 1619. It was consecrated in 1640. Originally, the cathedral had two towers, but one collapsed in 1776 and was never rebuilt.
The cathedral showcases Portuguese Manueline architecture with Tuscan exterior and Corinthian interior elements. The main altar is dedicated to St. Catherine of Alexandria and features gold-plated carvings. The cathedral measures 250 feet in length and 181 feet in breadth. The famous Golden Bell in the tower is renowned for its rich tone and is one of the largest bells in the world.
