
The Church of St. Cajetan is one of the most architecturally significant churches in Old Goa, inspired by the design of St. Peter's Basilica in Rome. Built by Italian friars of the Theatine order in the 17th century, this church showcases magnificent Corinthian architecture and houses an interesting underground crypt. It is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Churches and Convents of Goa.
The church was built in 1661 by Italian Theatine friars who came to Goa in the 17th century. It was dedicated to St. Cajetan, the founder of the Theatine order. The construction was funded by the Portuguese viceroy, Count of Sarzedas. The church served as the main church for the Theatine order in Goa and was an important center for religious education.
The church features magnificent Corinthian architecture with a grand facade, dome, and twin towers. The interior has a cruciform shape with a central dome inspired by St. Peter's Basilica. The main altar is dedicated to Our Lady of Divine Providence and features beautiful gilded woodwork. The church has seven altars and an interesting underground crypt.
