The church was first built as a chapel in 1541 and was later replaced by the present church in 1619. It served as the first church for the Portuguese sailors who would come to Goa after long sea voyages. The church was elevated to parish status in 1600. The famous bell was originally meant for the Church of St. Augustine in Old Goa but was placed here after that church was abandoned.
The church showcases Portuguese Baroque architecture with a brilliant white facade and twin towers. The interior features a simple yet elegant design with a main altar dedicated to Our Lady of Immaculate Conception. The church has a cruciform layout with a prominent central nave. The famous bell in the right tower is one of the largest in Goa and was cast in 1871.
